My mom owned a wedding caterer business for many years while I was growing up. I remember very well the venues and church social halls my sister and I helped her set up, serve delicacies and wash dishes in. Even though she employed several ladies part time, the preparation and tear down was always quite the production and a little of that feeling comes back to me every time Grant and I prepare our gear for a wedding. Since I grew up on this Hampton Roads peninsula, I remember The Chamberlin Hotel,
as it was called then, very well. Even as a teenager, I could look past the worn interiors and tell that it had once been a stately hotel. I knew of its octogenarian history on Fort Monroe military base and had read of the lavish parties for high ranking military and it always seemed a bit mysterious to me as I imagined the interesting guests that roamed the opulent hallways and verandas back in the day.
Fast forward to this past Spring when we found out that Megan and Dave's wedding reception would be held at the
54 million dollar newly renovated Chamberlin! Megan knew that she wanted a gorgeous venue and lots of time for photos, so we began very early the day of their wedding. With the backdrop of the James River and a cloud dappled sky, we shot her bridals on the brick veranda and in the gorgeous marbled hallways.
Then Dave arrived and while Grant began a few of his relaxed protraits in the pool room, I prepared Megan for their ' First Look '. This type of session is not for everyone, after all, some feel that it's bad luck to see the bride before she walks down the isle. Dave and Megan however, wanted their love chronicled in a special way. They wanted to look back in 10 or 15 years and show their kids...this is the first time Daddy saw mommy in her wedding dress, and they wanted their eact reactions captured closely. More often we photograph the first look when the bride is coming down the isle, but it's not always the bestt of circumstances, and it proved to be true for them as well...the church had strict rules that kept us in the balcony, so we were so grateful that they scheduled this memorable time together in the beginning of their day. It only took a few minutes and then they separated from one another and enjoyed the rest of their wedding party.
Here is the rest of their day's story as we saw it unfold...Enjoy!
